Croatia To Play Germany in Final
Croatia will play defending champions Germany in Saturday’s final at the ARAG ATP World Team Championships. Last year's Davis
Cup winners beat 2003 and 2004 titlists Chile 3-0 with singles triumphs for Ivan Ljubicic and Mario Ancic.
The final round-robin tie of the Blue Group was played indoors at the Ice Stadium, due to rain throughout the day in Duesseldorf.
For only the eighth-time in the 29-year history of the clay-court event, tournament organizers were forced to play matches
indoors. The last move to the Ice Stadium was made in 2003, the first in 1983. Watched by a record crowd of 7,800, Ljubicic gave Davis Cup champions Croatia the lead courtesy of a thrilling 7-5, 6-7(4),
6-4 win in two hours and 50 minutes. Hard-hitting Gonzalez won the last of their four career meetings at ATP Masters Series Monte-Carlo last month, but this time
Ljubicic gained revenge. Ljubicic won 77% of points on first serve, converting two of eight break points as Gonzalez failed to convert any of his eight
break points. The result means Monte-Carlo resident Ljubicic extends his 2006 ATP match record to 33-8. The 27-year-old then supported compatriot Mario Ancic on the sidelines in his 6-3, 6-2 win over Fernando Gonzalez in their
first career meeting.
After a 90-minute break, which saw the United States play their first singles rubber against Spain, Ancic returned to the
ice hockey stadium to partner Ivo Karlovic to a 7-5, 4-6, 17-15 (Match TB) victory over Paul Capdeville and Adrian Garcia
with the clock ticking towards 23:00 CET.
Duesseldorf to Host World-Class Tennis for Another Five Years
The ARAG ATP World Team Championship will continue to host world-class international tennis at the Rochusclub in Duesseldorf, Germany, through 2012. The governing body of men’s professional tennis, ATP and tournament organizers Rochusclub Turnier GmbH have extended the contract, expiring in 2007, by another five years.
