ARAG ATP World Team Cup Explained
First contested in 1978, the ARAG ATP World Team Championships continues to grow from strength to strength providing players with competitive tennis just one week before the second Grand Slam of the season, Roland Garros.
Host nation Germany and the United States are the only two countries that have competed in each edition of the clay-court round-robin competition at the Rochusclub.
Germany, victors over Argentina 2-1 in the 2005 championship match, are four-time winners (also 1989, 1994, 1998) of the ARAG ATP World Team Championship.
Spain, the United States, Australia and Sweden have each won the trophy on three occasions.
This year, three of the top five players in the INDESIT ATP Rankings are in Dusseldorf (as of May 15), led by No. 3 David Nalbandian, No. 4 Andy Roddick and No. 5 Ivan Ljubicic.
In addition, No. 7 James Blake, No. 8 Fernando Gonzalez and No. 9 Gaston Gaudio are in the field.
Also, the No. 1 team in the Stanford ATP Doubles Race, Bob and Mike Bryan return for the third straight year. They have a 5-1 career record in Dusseldorf.
