Red Group winner Argentina (2-1) earned their fifth trip to the final of the ARAG ATP World Team Championship with a 3-0 victory over two-time champions Chile on Thursday at the Rochusclub. They will meet Blue Group winner Czech Republic (3-0) in Saturday's championship.
Argentina returns to the final for the second time in three years (l. to Germany in '05) -- and will look for its first title since defeating Russia in 2002. They also were champions in 1980.
The Czech Republic will attempt to capture its first ARAG ATP World Team Championship title in their fourth final, most recently in 2003 (l. to Chile). The countries have met in round robin action each of the last two years, with Argentina winning 2-1 in 2005 and Czech Republic by the same score last year.
In the opening match, Czech Republic No. 1 Tomas Berdych looks for his first career win (0-2) against Juan Ignacio Chela while Jan Hajek meets Agustin Calleri for the first time.
Berdych, 21, went 2-1 in round robin play this week, opening on Monday with a 61 63 loss to David Ferrer before posting a 63 60 victory over Olivier Rochus on Wednesday and a 63 62 win over Philipp Kohlschreiber on Friday. He is 14-6 on clay this year, 21-12 overall. In three consecutive weeks starting April 15, he reached the semifinals of Monte Carlo (l. to Nadal), the semifinals of Munich (l. to Youzhny) and the quarterfinals of Rome (l. to Volandri). His best hard court result was the quarterfinals at Sydney in January. He is the No. 10 seed at Roland Garros and he will play Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the first round.
Chela, 27, lost his opening round robin match 61 64 Sunday against Robin Soderling and on Thursday defeated No. 5 Fernando Gonzalez 63 75. He is 1-1 in doubles this week (w/Calleri), defeating Bjorkman-T. Johansson of Sweden and losing to the Bryan brothers of the U.S. The Buenos Aires resident has a 27-11 record on the season, including 17-7 on clay. He won his fourth career ATP title in Acapulco (d. Moya) in March, reached the semifinals in Costa do Sauipe and quarterfinals in Buenos Aires and Rome. He is the No. 18 seed at Roland Garros and he will meet Frenchman Fabrice Santoro in the first round.
Hajek, 23, came into the tournament winless on the season (0-8) but he's won all three of his round robin matches this week, defeating Spanish alternate Bartolome Salva-Vidal 62 64 on Monday, Kristof Vliegen 76(7) 64 on Wednesday and Florian Mayer 76(4) 62. Has a 3-8 match record on the season. Last month he advanced to a final at the Monza (Italy) Challenger.
Calleri, 30, played his only singles match this week on Tuesday, falling to No. 8 James Blake in three sets. He has played in all three doubles matches, winning the decisive doubles point on Sunday (w/Chela) as Argentina defeated Sweden 2-1. He lost to the Bryans and then defeated Chile's Aguilar-Peralta (w/Prieto). He has a 14-11 match record this year, reaching the semifinals in Auckland (l. to Robredo), Acapulco (l. to Chela) and Barcelona (l. to Canas). He is one of four Argentines in the ATP Top 30 Rankings.
If the match is going to come down to doubles, both countries went 2-1 during the week with Berdych and Martin Damm teaming up for the Czech Republic while Calleri played twice with Chela (1-1) and once with Prieto (1-0).
