Spaniards David Ferrer and Nicolas Almagro displayed their strength on clay as each capped off a perfect week in singles action at the 30th edition of the ARAG ATP World Team Championship.
Ferrer defeated Olivier Rochus 6-3, 6-4 and Almagro dominated Kristof Vliegen 6-2, 6-1 to lead Spain past first-time qualifiers Belgium on Friday at the Rochusclub. Spain moved to second position in the final Blue group standings by winning their second tie of the week.
Ferrer also teamed up with youngster Bartolome Salva-Vidal to complete the 3-0 sweep of Belgium with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 (Match Tie-break) victory over Rochus and Steve Darcis.
With his three singles victories this week at the Rochusclub taking him to a 29-11 season mark, the No. 14-ranked Ferrer moved ino third on the list of ATP match wins leader for the 2007 season, behind World No. 2 Rafael Nadal (36) and Novak Djokovic (35). Ferrer posted straight-sets wins over Czech Tomas Berdych, the World No. 12, and recent Munich titlist Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany in the first two rounds.
Meanwhile, Almagro picked up his 19th victory on clay this season to move into a first-place tie with Nadal on the list of 2007 clay court wins leaders. The 21-year-old made his Rochusclub debut on Wednesday with a 6-4, 6-4 win over German Florian Mayer.
Four-time champions Spain came into Friday's match with a chance to qualify for the final. A 2-1 win by Germany coupled with a clean sweep by Spain would've put them back in the final for the sixth time. They last reached the final in 1997, when they defeated Australia.
