Soderling Seals Sweden's Win Over the U.S.
German fans were treated to an early preview of the Davis Cup semifinals as the United States and Sweden faced off Thursday at the Rochusclub for their final Round Robin tie at the ARAG ATP World Team Championship.
The USA entered with a 3-6 record against Sweden at the Rochusclub -- most recently in Sweden's last event appearance in 2005 -- and once again came up short in the tenth meeting between the two teams.
Missing the services of Mardy Fish, who suffered a left foot injury Wednesday, World No. 1 doubles player Mike Bryan took the court for ATP singles action for the first time in four years and could not meet the challenge presented by 2002 Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson. The Swede converted on three of five break chances, taking an hour to dismiss the American, 6-3, 6-3.
Robin Soderling relegated the U.S. to fourth position in its Round Robin group for the third straight year as he upset World No. 8 James Blake, also by a 6-3, 6-3 score. It marked his first victory over Blake, who defeated him in their previous encounter last year en route to the Stockholm title.
Blake said: "It is tough. I have just two days left to improve for the French Open. The positive thing I take from here to Paris is that I never gave up and served better."
Bob and Mike Bryan finished the week with a perfect 3-0 record in doubles action as they defeated Johansson and Soderling 6-2, 6-1 in 40 minutes. The twins conceded just three games in each of their doubles matches this week.
The Bryans, who are making their fourth career appearance in Duesseldorf, improved to a 10-2 team record at the ARAG ATP World Team Championship.
Three-time champion Sweden finished the week at third in the Red group standings. They lost their first two ties against Argentina and Chile.
