U.S. Wins First Tie Since 2004

The United States ended a winless drought at the ARAG ATP World Team Championship, as the World No. 1 doubles team of Bob and Mike Bryan defeated Argentines Agustin Calleri and Juan Ignacio Chela 6-2, 6-1 in the decisive doubles match Tuesday at the Rochusclub.

The Bryans, who are coming off of the title win at Masters Series Hamburg, also clinched the last winning tie for the USA in 2004 against the Netherlands. The U.S. had since suffered a series of eight consecutive 1-2 losses in their Round Robin ties over the last three years.

Calleri and Chela had won the decisive doubles point in Argentina's come-from-behind victory over Sweden on Sunday, defeating Jonas Bjorkman and Thomas Johansson in the Match Tie-break.

World No. 8 James Blake established the early lead for the U.S. contingent as he shrugged off a sluggish start in the day's first singles match. Calleri quickly took the first set by converting on three of six break opportunities, but Blake denied the Argentine the remainder of the way as he saved all eight break chances faced in the final two sets.

Calleri, in turn, surrendered his serve at 3-3 in the third set to set Blake on his way to the 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory.

Blake said: "I had a good feeling today. I simply have to play my game. It is more effective when I remain aggressive instead of attempting to copy a clay court specialist's game."

Jose Acasuso, who had saved match point against Swede Jonas Bjorkman in Argentina's opener, once again gave his country a chance to compete for the victory. He leveled the tie at 1-1 as he defeated Mardy Fish, waiting out a short rain delay to serve out the victory, 7-5, 6-4.
