Wild Card to Two-Time World Champions Chile

Old love never dies. Chile will again compete at the 2007 Tennis World Team Championship at the Duesseldorf Rochusclub.

Top player and 2007 Australian Open finalist Fernando Gonzalez (currently ranked 6th in the world) has accepted the wild card of the organisers. Thus one of the most successful and most popular teams of the past few years will once again play at the ARAG ATP World Team Championship. The visitors may look forward to yet another merry, Latin American atmosphere created by the Chileans' fan club in Duesseldorf...

Chile's tennis team celebrated their first major team title in their history four years ago at the Rochusclub, when Fernando Gonzalez, Nicolas Massu and Marcelo Rios won the ATP team trophy. It was a big surprise which triggered real tennis enthusiasm in the South American country. In 2004, Gonzalez and Massu retained their title in Duesseldorf and went on to win the Olympic gold medals in singles (Massu) and doubles in Athens.

The form and success of 26-year-old Fernando Gonzalez has been consistently increasing. He has established himself among the top ten in the world. He has shown convincing performances, not least at the 2007 Australian Open in Melbourne. He defeated Tommy Haas in the semi-finals but had to bow to Roger Federer in the final.

Gonzalez has an impressive record at the Rochusclub: He lost just two of his altogether 13 singles and only one of his six doubles. As Chile's number one player, he now has time until the weekend to name "his" team for the World Team Championship.
